Telehealth may be a video conversation, a voice call or a written exchange online. In-person care means sharing a room with the clinician.
Describe the injury before choosing a product
Write down what hurts, how it limits your day and what has already been tried. Bring medicine names and any records you have.
A national group of boards that license doctors is called the Federation of State Medical Boards. On prescribing, its May 2026 advice says a menu choice alone is not enough reason for a prescription.
Leave room to ask back
It also calls for an open channel for the patient’s follow-up questions.
Ask how the visit will work. Can you raise a concern in your own words and get a reply?
Your location affects permission to practise
Your location during an online visit affects the clinician’s permission to provide care. This federal health guidance was checked on September 26, 2026.
Some states let an out-of-state clinician register for remote care instead of obtaining a full licence there.
Check the route with the relevant state board, including if you will travel before the visit.
Check the clinician and pharmacy separately
The state medical board’s records cover both a doctor’s licence and the board’s own public actions against that doctor.
Pharmacy licences sit in a different record, held by a state pharmacy board.
A clean public record does not judge how well someone will handle your care.
Know who arranges the next step
The group’s advice calls for arranging any needed tests. It also calls for sending you to another clinician if your concern needs an exam in person.
When shaping policy, state boards may draw on this advice. It does not create a single legal rule across the country.
